When I was a child in the 1990s, my friends and I had two educations. We had school (which was not the big deal it is today), and we also had what I call a hunter-gather education. We played in mixed-age neighborhood groups almost every day after school, often until dark. We played all weekend and all summer long. We had time to explore in all sorts of ways, and also time to become bored and figure out how to overcome boredom, time to get into trouble and find our way out of it, time to daydream, time to immerse ourselves in hobbies, and time to read comics and whatever else we wanted to read rather than the books assigned to us. What I learnt in my hunter-gatherer education has been far more valuable to my adult life than what I learnt in school, and I think others in my age group would say the same if they took time to think about it. Today, children in cities, especially children in Hanoi lack adequate active playing space. Many urban children are living in little rooms in packed apartment buildings, or in little houses buried deep inside Hanoi’s tiny narrow alleys. Most parents currently limit their children’s basic needs to adequate nutrition and learning. The right to play and the benefits from playing together with other children have not been given the attention they deserve.
Chúng tôi muốn làm gì
What do we want to do?
We desire to help the children to experience their childhood in the right way; we hope that one day, there will be see-saws and children’s slide right beside the beautiful flower gardens, the public spaces for people along with the high building.
ThinkPlaygorounds - a group of volunteers almost all are engineers, was founded to repair and enhance existing playgrounds in the city, and to create new active play places. After 10 month operating, ThinkPlayground has built 7 playing spaces and co-operated with other teams to create 4 playing spaces around Hanoi. Our methods of operation includes closely coordinating with the residential area to have a part of public space for the playground, getting along with the architects to create an appropriate design, assuring the appliances from recycled materials to be safe, durable and creative. Beside creating the playgrounds, our team will organize other activities like “Playday” to improve the citizen’s cognitive and workshop to open the participants’ network, cooperating with communication unit to be supported by the government.
